Nashville singer-songwriter Natalie Prass reimagines ’70s folk for the modern world, integrating elements of soul and R&B in the process. A former member of Jenny Lewis’ touring band, she is now gearing up to release her self-titled debut on January 27th. In anticipation, she’s shared album opener “My Baby Don’t Understand Me”.
A sentimental track emboldened by rich, warm instrumentation, the song was partially written while she and her then-boyfriend were going through a particularly rocky phase. “I wrote the chorus of the song in tears on my boyfriend’s piano immediately after a fight,” Prass explains. “I later finished the song with an incredible artist, Peter Barbee, emailed it to my boyfriend, [and] we broke up shortly after I sent it.”
She adds, “He used this song as an example of why we needed to end, and that might possibly haunt me forever. Note to self: When a relationship is on the rocks, but you want to work it out on your end, maybe don’t send songs like this.” Listen in below.
