There are several schools of thought on who exactly is the ultimate lord supreme of the nerds, but my money is and always has been on Simon Pegg (sorry Chris Hardwick). For further proof, look no further than Pegg’s latest gig as co-writer of the upcoming Star Trek 3.
Deadline was first to report Pegg’s expanded role with the film, noting that he recently began working on the script alongside Doug Jung. Jung previously worked on the TNT show Dark Blue and wrote the script for Diamond, a film being produced by Paramount and Bad Robot, which also produces the Star Trek films. Pegg’s previous writing credits include all three films in Edgar Wright’s Cornetto Trilogy, as well as Paul and Run, Fatboy, Run.
This announcement is the latest in a series of behind the scenes moves involving the mega franchise’s third installment. After J.J. Abrams, who directed the first two films in the series, left for the greener pastures of Star Wars, Roberto Orci, who co-wrote the first two films, came aboard to direct. A short period of time and several creative differences later, he too abandoned spaceship, making room for Fast 5 & 6‘s Justin Lin to take the captain’s seat, which will hopefully make room for Vin Diesel and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson to join the cast alongside Pegg, who appeared in the first two films as Scotty, engineer extraordinaire.
