Formed in the early ’60s, The Sonics played a hard-edged brand of garage rock that served as a distinct counter to contemporaries like the Kingsmen and Dynamics (and have since been cited as an influence by everyone from The White Stripes to Bruce Springsteen). The band released three full-lengths — 1965’s Here Are The Sonics, 1966’s Boom, 1967’s Introducing The Sonics — before disbanding to pursue other projects. Aside from a brief reunion in the early ’70s, The Sonics would not reform until 2007, and they’ve been gigging regularly ever since.
Now, nearly 50 years after its predecessor, the iconic garage rock outfit is set to return with a brand new album: Entitled This is the Sonics, it will be available March 31st via Revox Records. The 12-track effort was produced by Detroit’s Jim Diamond (The White Stripes, The Dirtbombs) and features original Sonics members Jerry Roslie (keyboards, vocals), Larry Parypa (guitar, vocals), and Rob Lind (sax, harmonica, vocals).
In anticipation, the band has unveiled lead single “Bad Betty”. A ferocious rocker that charges forth at breakneck speeds, it’s fueled by nonstop riffs and spine-tingling shrieks. Check it out below.
In support of the new album, The Sonics are scheduled to tour the US this April. Consult their full itinerary below.
