Arcade Fire member Will Butler describes his upcoming solo debut Policy as “music where the holy fool runs afoul of the casual world,” a frenetic brand of American rock inspired by the likes of Bob Dylan, the Breeders, and Ghostface Killah. Our first taste of this multi-faceted sound came with lead single “Take My Side”, a rollicking garage rock jam. Today, Butler switches pace entirely with a new track called “Anna”.
Here, the Canadian musician draws clear influence from ’80s new wave music. His quirky medley of chunky synths, flourishes of bright horns, and some dense drum machine rhythms has clear ties back to everyone from David Byrne to a slightly more eccentric Peter Gabriel. Yet Butler makes the track all his own, breathing life into this ’80s dance party with a fresh perspective and a dash of wit. Check out the song below via its accompanying video, which features a besuited Butler dancing up a storm.
Policy is due out March 10th via Merge Records.
