MONAKR is a new project comprised of Hey Champ’s Saam Hagshenas and Jonathan Marks, Gemini Club’s Daniel Brunelle, and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Matthew Santos. While its various members have all dabbled in some version of pop music in the past, this new supergroup promises to explore the genre’s “deeper and darker side,” as “filtered through Chicago’s R&B and House traditions,” according to a press release.
MONAKR is gearing up to release its as-yet-untitled debut EP on June 16th, and they’re previewing it today with lead single “Diamond”. As its title implies, the track is a radiant and uplifting gem, full of glimmering synths and equally polished hooks. Though it has some rather somber beginnings — it was written by Hagshenas shortly after his uncle’s passing — it’s the track that helped birth MONAKR. Take a listen below.
