Jon Stewart is leaving The Daily Show

on February 10, 2015, 7:15pm

Jon Stewart has announced he will be stepping down as host of Comedy Central’s The Daily Show.

Stewart took over hosting duties from Craig Kilborn in 1999, and in January celebrated the end of his 16th year as host of the popular fake news program. He will remain on the program until his contract expires later this year.

In the announcement Comedy Central delivered via Twitter, the company said of Stewart, “He is a comic genius, generous with his time and talent, and will always be a part of the Comedy Central family.”

Meanwhile, the Twitter account for The Daily Show advises fans to tune in for all of tonight’s episode.

Update – January 11th, 12 a.m.: As promised Stewart addressed his decision on tonight’s episode, saying,  “This show doesn’t deserve an even slightly restless host, and neither do you … In my heart I know it’s time for someone else to have this opportunity.”
