Neill Blomkamp: “There’s a high possibility” of another Aliens film

on February 11, 2015, 3:45pm

In a new interview with Uproxx, director Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) has revealed that he may very well continue work on that secret Aliens project of his.

When Blomkamp first previewed a collection of concept art of a new Aliens film, he emphasized that it was merely a passion project, and that 20th Century Fox wasn’t even aware of his vision. Now, the director says “Fox would make it, like, tomorrow,” adding that “there’s a high possibility, a high degree of chance that it happens that I go back and try to get Alien made.”

While the accompanying art offers only the briefest glimpse of Blomkamp’s concept, it’s one that may involve Ellen Ripley herself, Sigourney Weaver. According to the director, he was able bounce ideas off the actress as they worked together on his latest film, Chappie. He initially considered “an idea that didn’t have Sigourney, but I spent all of the shooting time with her, it was like, holy shit, that could actually be really interesting.” Based on the concept art, specifically drawings of Hicks and the “space jockey” helmet, Blomkamp is at least plotting a similar aesthetic to the iconic original films.

For her part, Weaver appears to be tentatively on-board. In a recent Q&A, she said that Blomkamp sent her artwork as early as last spring and that “there’s no one I can imagine that would do a better job.” However, she quickly added that “we’ll have to see what happens.”

Even with renewed interest in the film, the project does face some obstacles. Namely, Ridley Scott is already at work on a sequel to Prometheus, continuing the story of Elisabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and android David (Michael Fassbender). Fox may not want two Aliens-related titles within such proximity. However, Scott said that Xenomorphs wouldn’t be featured in his film, which could be enough differentiation to give Blomkamp the greenlight.
