Los Angeles indie rockers The Lonely Wild have long taken a methodical approach to songwriting. However, when they hit the studio last year with veteran songwriter/producer John Vanderslice to record the follow-up to their debut LP, The Sun As It Comes, they had to learn to let some of that go. Upon arrival, Vanderslice instructed the band to scrap all its demos and start anew using a more organic, and less meticulous, perspective.
“In the past, we’ve always labored over every detail of our recordings, picking apart each performance,” frontman Andrew Carroll explains. “But with John, you can’t do that. He’s kind of like Willy Wonka in the studio — he’s always on the move, whipping up this infectious, magical energy.”
The Lonely Wild emerged from those sessions with its sophomore album, Chasing White Light, out later this year via Ursa Major Recordings. The LP’s first single, “Running”, is about death, a theme that will be explored further on the rest of album, according to the band.
Descending string arrangements pour over a lightly strummed acoustic guitar before Carroll comes in posing questions like, “Did I catch you dreaming/ Even believing you’re alive?” Vocalist Jessi Williams echoes his inquiries as the song builds with heavier drums and splashes of guitar distortion. It’s a heavy-hearted cross-examination of life’s failures, but ends on a hopeful message of “don’t stop running.” Listen in below.
The Lonely Wild will perform several shows during South by Southwest.
