Lorde may be hard at work on her new album, but there’s another New Zealander worth keeping an eye on. Thomston is the solo moniker of rising 19-year-old singer/producer Thomas Stoneman. Following in the footsteps of the Pure Heroine herself, the prodigy is set to take the world by storm with his brand of brooding, minimalist pop. Take for example “Collarbones”, the first single off his forthcoming Backbone EP.
Here, Stoneman’s soulful croon is accompanied by beats so deep they could carve out a cavern, making for a track that’s at once stirring and serene. It’s not the first time we’ve heard this sort of coupling of disparate textures (also see SOHN, Fyfe, Banks), but it’s hard to deny Thomston’s exquisite touch. Just what exactly are they feeding the alt pop fledglings over in New Zealand? Listen in below.
Backbone officially hits shelves on April 20th. For more of Thomston, check out his 2014 Argonaut EP.
