Will Butler shares new song “Waving Flag”, announces tour dates — listen

on February 24, 2015, 5:00pm

Will Butler today delivered the second song for his week-long project with UK’s The Guardian. Every day this week, the Arcade Fire member will take a news story from the British paper and write a new track about it. Yesterday saw “Clean Monday” inspired by the debt crisis in Greece, and now he’s presented “Waving Flag” based on stories about anti-apartheid figure Moses Kotane and Ukrainian separatists.

Upon his completion of the track, Butler tweeted that his “brain hurts.” It’s easy to see why, as he grappled with “deep American kneejerk suspicion of Soviet communism” and “pro-Soviet nationalism.” “This is a song about backward-looking violent nationalism contrasting with future-looking lift-up-the-weak nationalism,” he explained. “And then there’s me, a million miles away in America, watching from a great and blurring distance. Happy Tuesday!”

In addition to the new song, Butler has announced tour dates in support of his forthcoming solo debut, PolicyThe album is out March 10th via Merge, and you can find his full itinerary below.
