Talk of Will Smith going into studios with Kanye West has been circling for years, but recently the chatter has been getting louder. Earlier this week while on Ryan Seacrest’s radio show, the former Fresh Prince said, “I spent a week or so with ‘Ye and we went into the studio a couple of times and he’s trying to get my gassed up,” adding a caveat that he doesn’t “want to say, ‘Yeah I’m gonna do it!’ and then get in there and suck. I’m going to stay cautiously optimistic.”
Now, during a red carpet interview with Hollyscoop at the premiere for his new movie Focus, Smith has revealed exactly how much work he and West have been doing. “You know I’ve recorded a lot,” he said. “I’ve recorded a lot. I don’t have anything I like yet, but I’ve probably recorded around seven or eight [songs]. It’s not for certain, it’s just explorative.”
Explorative or not, the idea of the Fresh Prince and Yeezus in studio together is getting more tantalizing by the minute. Smith clearly has the bug, as he’s rapped on both Letterman and Fallon in recent weeks. Just last night, Smith delivered a rendition of “Summertime” with Cleto and the Cletones on Kimmel Live!. Unbeknownst to the actor/rapper, his old collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff was grooving on Kimmel’s “Wall of America” behind him. Jeff later had a question for Smith that left him a bit twitchy. “This is awkward,” Smith joked. Watch both clips below.
