According to a new report, Idris Elba is in talks to take on the villain role in Star Trek 3. Talks are said to be in early stages, but with filming expected to begin in June, the casting should be locked down soon.
Rumors have been circulating since Star Trek Into Darkness that the Klingons would be the baddies in the third installment of the franchise reboot. The fan-favorite race played a minor role in the previous film, and have yet to be featured prominently.
If confirmed, Elba would join a cast that includes Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Simon Pegg, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, and Anton Yelchin returning to the roles they played in the first two films. Justin Lin will take over the director’s chair from J.J. Abrams, who remains on as a producer. Pegg wrote the script alongside Doug Jung.
Elba’s upcoming slate includes the buzzed-about Beasts of No Nation, an African war drama recently picked up by Netflix. He’ll also appear in Avengers: Age of Ultron as his Thor character Heimdall, and provide voice work for The Jungle Book (as Shere Khan) and the Finding Nemo sequel Finding Dory.
