FOX has officially announced a new six-episode season of The X-Files, to begin production as soon as this summer.

David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are on board to return as FBI agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The show’s original creator, Chris Carter, will helm the revival.

“I think of it as a 13-year commercial break,” Carter said in an issued statement. “The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.”

The X-Files ran on FOX for nine seasons between 1993 and 2002. A feature-length film based on the show was released in 1998 to positive acclaim. A sequel, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, was released 10 years later in 2008, but received negative reviews and performed poorly at the box office.

According to reports, the forthcoming season would allow Carter to conclude storylines left open after the most recent X-Files movie.

Other principal cast members are also expected to return for the new season, including Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner).
