R&B singer-songwriter Kelela has announced a new EP entitled Hallucinogen. Due out May 5th, the record is described as “a 6-song cycle that explores the light and darkness of love and sexuality.”
Each of the tracks moves through one of the stages of a relationship: rejection and amputation, domination and empowerment, feral lust and longing, rebirth and recovery, delirium and ectasy, and finally the payoff. As an entry into the cohesive release, Kelela has shared the opening track, “A Message”.
Kelela worked alongside Kanye West and Björk producer Arca, who she first met on a boat in August 2012. “We sought one another out across a dance floor and within 5 minutes agreed to meet each other as soon as possible to collaborate,” she recounts. Over the next three days, they recorded “5 or 6” demos, one of which became “A Message”. “The initial version of the song spilled out of us in about 25 minutes. Since then, it’s been like a sculpture that I’ve come to and refined over time, adding a lyric here, refining a melody there, adding a bridge, etc.”

Hallucinogen is said to bridge the gap between Kelela’s Cut 4 Me mixtape and her debut full-length, expected this fall. Find the Hallucinogen tracklist below, followed by her tour itinerary.
