Despite vinyl’s resurgence over the last few years, it’s still incredibly hard to keep a record store afloat, with many businesses shuttering their doors left and right. Insound.com, an online retailer and general supporter of all things independent music, has sadly suffered the same fate. According to Stereogum, it will be closing up shop at the end of the month after a 16-year run.
Launched in 1999 by Christian Anthony, Matt Wishnow, and Ari Sass, Insound grew to become much more than just a hub for records and band merchandise. The company hosted events, such as parties during CMJ and South By Southwest, as well as championed up-and-coming bands through its various online reviews, features, and promotions. In 2008, more than half of Insound’s profit came from selling vinyl.
