Prince sued for copyright infringement after releasing Judith Hill album for free download

on March 28, 2015, 1:05pm

A copyright infringement lawsuit involving Prince is hardly news, but rarely is he the defendant. TMZ reports the legendary musician is facing legal action for the same practices he’s long battled against: the unauthorized distribution of music.

Earlier this week, Prince sent out an email encouraging fans to download a new album from singer Judith Hill. The email included a link for a free download of the 11-track record, which remains active as of today. “Please spend some time with this music and then share it with someone U love,” he wrote.

Now, however, Prince has been hit with a lawsuit by producer Jolene Cherry and Sony Records, who claim Hill is signed to an exclusive contract with them. The suit adds that Prince did not have permission to release Hill’s music, and the plaintiffs are now seeking punitive damages.
