Rey Pila announces sophomore album, The Future Sugar, shares “Apex” — listen

on March 12, 2015, 9:35am

After garnering international attention for their 2010 self-titled debut, Rey Pila moved out of Mexico City in 2012. They relocated to New York with the intention of recording their sophomore album, enlisting Chris Coady (Beach House, Wavves) to serve as producer. In a sort of rock ‘n’ roll fairytale story of happenstance, Julian Casablancas happened to overhear the new material in an office one day, and set out to sign the band.

Fast forward two years, and now Casablancas’ Cult Records is set to release the band’s new record, The Future Sugar, on May 5th.

As a first listen, they’ve shared their new single “Apex”. A prime example of Rey Pila’s energetic synth rock, the track makes it easy to see how The Strokes’ frontman was so instantly attracted. Sputtering synths pulse out over muscular percussion, a jolt of ’80s power that dares your feet to stay still. In fact, that’s exactly what frontman Diego Solórzano does during the chorus, coaxing you into “Just dancing/ Into the dead of night/ Dancing/ Until you start a fight.” That refrain says about all you need to know about Rey Pila, so check out the track below.

Rey Pila will be touring North America in support of The Rentals through the summer. See their full schedule below.
