When Seth Avett of The Avett Brothers and Jessica Lea Mayfield set out to put together a tribute album for the late Elliot Smith, they certainly had no dearth of quality songs to choose from. Unsurprisingly, some of the tracks they worked on didn’t make it onto the final Seth Avett & Jessica Lea Mayfield Sing Elliott Smith tracklist. On their tour supporting the record, they’ve frequently brought out non-album track “Miss Misery”, Smith’s Oscar nominated song from Good Will Hunting. They did so once again at a recent stop at California’s KCRW radio station, and the performance can now be heard below.
The live in-studio recording is the crispest version we’ve heard of Avett and Mayfield’s rendition. The haunting track is made entirely new by adding the duet, giving it a note of shared pain not present in the lonely original. Check it out below, and listen to the whole live set at KCRW.
During the interview portion of the show, Avett revealed that he and Mayfield may have a second covers album in them. He said that once they had started the process, “it was kinda hard to stop covering Elliot Smith.”
