Writer Alex Garland (28 Days Later, Sunshine) makes his directorial debut this April 10th with Ex Machina. The film stars Domhall Gleeson as Caleb Smith, “a programmer at an internet-search giant,” who “wins a competition to spend a week at the private mountain estate of the company’s brilliant and reclusive CEO, Nathan Bateman,” played by Oscar Isaac.
The synopsis continues, “Upon his arrival, Caleb learns that Nathan has chosen him to be the human component in a Turing Test—charging him with evaluating the capabilities, and ultimately the consciousness, of Nathan’s latest experiment in artificial intelligence. That experiment is Ava (Alicia Vikander), a breathtaking A.I…” But Ava’s emotional intelligence is so unexpectedly significant, Caleb begins to wonder who is testing whom.
Ex Machina will have its North American premiere at South by South West on March 14th. Garland, Isaac and Gleeson will be joined by composers Geoff Barrow of Portishead and Ben Salisbury for a panel discussion the following day.
