There was a time earlier in his career when Wale looked to be on a similar trajectory as Kanye West. The D.C.-based MC delivered high-end concept albums, packed with playful, quick-witted rhymes and equally impressive production. Consequently, his decision to sign with Rick Ross’ gangsta rap-centric Maybach Music Records was met with some aversion among fans and critics alike, and in the years since, Wale has failed to re-capture the success of his early years.
Now, though, Wale returns with an intriguing new project called The Album About Nothing. Inspired by his critically acclaimed 2007 mixtape, Mixtape About Nothing, it’s a concept album inspired entirely by the classic TV sitcom Seinfeld, created with the assistance of Jerry Seinfeld himself.
Due out March 31st, the album features Usher, SZA, J. Cole, and Jeremih. Perhaps most intriguing, however, is Wale’s first-ever collaboration with Kanye, a track entitled “The Summer League”. For whatever reason, the uptemo number failed to make the final tracklist, but this morning, Wale unleashed it to the masses on NYC radio station Hot 97. It also features a guest spot from Ty Dolla $ign. Listen below.
