Courtney Barnett takes a dark look at the world in “Kim’s Caravan” video — watch

on April 15, 2015, 10:15am

The lyrics to Courtney Barnett’s “Kim’s Caravan” leave little question about her feelings regarding the state of the environment. There’s one part where she talks about a seemingly suicidal seal: “Guess it just wants to die/ I would wanna die too/ With people putting oil into my air.” In the new video for the Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sitdirector Bec Kingma takes the “apocalyptic tale” and transposes it onto stark images of Barnett’s childhood.

“In conceptualizing a film clip for the track,” Kingma explained, “I am keen to explore the adult attempt to return to that place of childish innocence. If you have ever returned to a childhood holiday haunt in the offseason, it’s likely you’ve discovered the sad realisation that the place barely resembles your idyllic memories. As grown ups we all yearn for a time and place where our biggest concerns were the sand in our bathers and the mosquitos eating us alive.”

Watch the clip, in which the singer-songwriter takes a bleak look at a beautiful past before going all Virginia Woolf, below.

“Kim’s Caravan” will be released as a Record Store Day 12-inch B-sided with a cover of John Cale’s “Close Watch”.
