It was just a year and a month ago that Future Islands first took the stage at the Late Show. No one knew it at the time, but that performance would end up launching the Baltimore synth pop outfit into a whole new level of notoriety. Of course, the song they performed, “Seasons (Waiting On You)”, and the album it came off of, Singles, were incredible in their own right, both earning Top Song and Album honors. But nothing beats becoming a David Letterman meme.
It’s no surprise, then, that as Letterman prepares to make his exit from the late night program, he asked Future Islands to return one more time. Last night, Samuel T. Herring and the boys made the most of it, debuting their new single “The Chase”. The particularly emotional performance was dedicated to the people of Baltimore and saw the band accompanied by Paul Shaffer and members of the CBS Orchestra.
To show just how important the evening really was, the band also posted a pair of images to their Twitter account. One showed a teacher’s inspired assignment, and the other detailed the aftermath of a Herring dance-a-thon.
