Los Angeles crooner Gallant introduced himself to the world last year with his debut EP, Zebra. The singer was almost entirely silent after that, until suddenly last month he reemerged with the track “Open Up”. A synth-heavy, sexy slice of modern alternative R&B, the song was a powerful way to re-enter the game. Now, Gallant is back with another knock-out single, “Talking in Your Sleep”.

This new number hunches down in the dark electronics How to Dress Well, only here it’s provided by producer STiNT with an ear closer towards classic-yet-altering genre arrangements. But over all the echoing vibrations and wails both synthetic and vocal, it’s Gallant’s own voice that makes the track such a captivating piece. He gracefully dances across lines like, “Talking in your sleep/ Waiting for a love/ Even though you know you’ll end up walking a mile on your own/ you can’t seem to break out of it.” When he finally hits the high notes on the bridge, it’s like there’s a separate entity entirely bursting forth from his lungs, something that lives on an wholly different plane of existence from the rest of us.

Take a listen:

Both “Talking in Your Sleep” and “Open Up” are expected on a release from Gallant’s new label home, Mind of a Genius, later this year. Below, read a journal entry Gallant wrote as a companion to the new track.
