Girlpool premieres title track to debut album Before the World Was Big — listen

on April 15, 2015, 1:25pm

Girlpool’s debut album, Before the World Was Big, is filled with lo-fi ruminations on the loss of innocence and growing up in a world of disillusionment. Perhaps no track carries these weighty themes with more care than the album’s title track and lead single.

“Before the World Was Big” opens with the nostalgic plinkings of a child’s toy piano, the kind with the rainbow colored keys. Then, thoughtful bass thumbings and slightly dispirited skipping guitar lines come in as Harmony Tividad and Cleo Tucker sing in unison about how their neighborhood doesn’t look the same now that they’re a few feet taller and a few years older. It all comes to head as the two sing in a round, “I just miss how it felt standing next to you wearing matching dresses before the world was big.” Wistfully earnest, the track is at once sweet and just a bit heartbreaking.

Before the World Was Big is due out June 2nd via Wichita Recordings, with pre-orders going on here. Ahead of a record release show on July 1st, the band has a string of tour dates that sees them opening for Waxahatchee. See the full itinerary following the album tracklist.
