Stream: Mikal Cronin’s new album MCIII

on April 28, 2015, 1:45pm

Garage rock songwriter Mikal Cronin will release his third album, MCIII, on May 5th through Merge Records. In anticipation, it’s streaming in full via iTunes.

The 11-track effort serves as a follow-up to 2012’s excellent MCII. Just like on his previous works, Cronin played a majority of the instruments on the record — including saxophone — and also arranged parts for a string quartet.

The LP is split in half, with the last six tracks forming a conceptual suite about his time in school in the Pacific Northwest. “I’ve been thinking of doing something like that for a long time and always backed off,” Cronin said of the suite in a recent interview with SPIN. “I didn’t know if I could pull that off in a way that wasn’t just lame or whiny, or just bad, you know? It was scary to actually tell that kind of story directly, instead of alluding to a non-specific breakup or something. So I just went for it.”

Pre-orders are ongoing. If you’re looking for a quick primer on Cronin’s work, consult our guide here. Below, watch Cronin cover Big Star’s “The Ballad of El Goodo”.
