Non-Believers is the solo debut of Superchunk frontman Mac McCaughan. Due out on May 5th through Merge Records, it’s said to be inspired by the “early ’80s era of music when punk evolved into something more introspective, focusing on themes of isolation and eventually turning into post-punk and new wave.” The 10-track effort is previewed today with “Wet Leaves”.
Though its title may suggest rainy, dismal days, “Wet Leaves” actually recalls the hopeful and refreshingly misty moments that often follow a torrential downpour. Feathery, pastel synths surface here and there, like a sun trying to peek through a blanket of clouds, while a faint bass line playfully bounces about in the background. According to McCaughan, the pleasant number’s “emblematic of the album thematically, because it’s about transitions and borders and growing up.” Annie Hayden, of the ’90s Merge outfit Spent, provides additional backing vocals.
