The National’s Bryce Dessner made his debut as a composer with 2013’s Aheym. Now, another one of his pieces will soon be made available to the public: Music for Wood and Strings, as performed by New York collective Sō Percussion, arrives May 19th digitally and on CD via Brassland Records. A vinyl release is expected later this spring.
Sō Percussion — who originally premiered the opus live two years ago — is scheduled to perform it again in its entirety on April 27th at BRIC House in Brooklyn. Another Dessner original, “Quilting” is set for a May 28th premiere, with an encore on May 30th. The Los Angeles Philharmonic will perform the piece at the Walt Disney Concert Hall as part of the Next on Grand series. “Every quilt has a story,” Dessner said in a statement. “I’m drawn to their symbolism, the communal aspect, the process by which they’re made.”
Below, watch Sō Percussion play part of Music for Woods and Strings using special “chordsticks” custom-made by Dessner himself.
