The Tallest Man on Earth debuts new single “Dark Bird is Home” — listen

on April 14, 2015, 12:05pm

Kristian Matsson, aka The Tallest Man on Earth, will return on May 12th with his new album, Dark Bird Is Home, via Dead Oceans. Lead single “Sagres” had Matsson displaying more lushness than past efforts, the delicate husk of his vocals wrapped up with echoing percussion and floating strings. On the newly-released title track, however, he reminds us that the Tallest Man is truly just him and his guitar.

Gentle strumming takes up most of the track, with flourishes of quick-fretted fingerpicks. Matsson sings like one imagines he might speak: carefully and with a hint of mourning. Even so, the lyrics are meant more as a comforting blanket than a shroud, as he reassures that “suddenly the day gets you down/ But this is not the end/ This is fine.” Then, at about the 3:20 mark, drums come in and the whole thing blossoms into an entirely different atmosphere. Take a listen:

The Tallest Man on Earth will tour this summer backed by a full band. The schedule, which already includes stops at Eaux Claires Festival, Forecastle, and Hurricane & Southside, has been recently expanded. Find the complete itinerary below.
