Caitlin Gutenberger started Two Sheds on a dare. Her husband, Johnny of the band Far, challenged her to write the music “to match the beauty of her voice.” The result became 2006’s Strange Ammunition, and the band was off and running. But after fours years of touring and another EP, Gutenberger put the project on hold to join Rouge Wave frontman Zach Rogue’s Release the Sunbirds side project. It wasn’t until two years later, now an LA resident, that Gutenberger was issued another dare, and Two Sheds was back on.
This time, a friend dared her to write 20 songs in 24 hours. Instead, she came out with 60 songs in 72 hours, enough of which were so good that she, her husband, and drummer Josh Barnhart decided to record them live over five days. This led to Two Shed’s new LP, Assembling, due out June 26th on Crossbill Records.
Now, the band has shared “I Am My Own” as a taste of the new album. With a bit of Sharon Van Etten’s tonality and Angel Olsen’s structure, the song trudges through a heavy guitar line pushed on my rhythmically constant hand claps. Gutenberger’s voice is effortless and full, a conversational flow as she tip-toes around trying to be an understanding, caring friend and getting trapped in unhealthy relationships.
“There is a fine line between being a good friend and a landfill for so many emotional dump trucks,” she says of the song’s meaning. “I want to help and to support, but I also need energy left over to do that for myself. I’m learning how not to feel guilty about setting those kinds of boundaries. So the song is saying, ‘Hello friend. Here is my love and advice and support – you will do whatever you want with it. I’m not your mother or your wife. I am my own.'”
