Star Trek star Chris Pine is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to play the romantic lead in Wonder Woman, opposite titular star Gal Gadot. Variety reports that Pine would be playing Steve Trevor, an intelligence officer in the United States Army.
In comic lore, Trevor’s plane crashes on Paradise Island, the secluded home of Wonder Woman and the Amazons. He’s nursed back to health by Princess Diana (Gadot), who falls in love with him and follows him when he returns to his homeland, where she eventually goes on to join the ranks of the Justice League.
It’s been long rumored that Scott Eastwood would be playing the Trevor character in Suicide Squad, a way to connect the two films within the DC Cinematic Universe. However, as Variety hears it, Eastwood was offered either the chance to test against other actors for the part, or sign onto Suicide Squad straight away. He opted to take the done deal, though exactly who he will play in David Ayer’s film is still unknown.
Pine is set to return to the Star Trek universe for a third installment reportedly titled Star Trek Beyond, which is being written by co-star Simon Pegg and will feature Idris Elba in the villain role. His next film out in theaters in Sundance crowd-pleaser Z for Zacariah.
Gadot’s Wonder Woman will first appear in next year’s Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, and then will appear in her own film, due out June 23rd, 2017, followed by the first Justice League film a few months later on November 17th. Wonder Woman will be helmed by Patty Jenkins (Monster), who filled the director’s seat after it was vacated by Breaking Bad‘s Michelle MacLaren.
