Listen to Billie Marten’s acoustic cover of Royal Blood’s “Out of the Black”

on May 27, 2015, 12:20pm

Billie Marten turns just 16 years old today. Though she may only be a teenager, the young girl from Ripon, England sure knows her way around heartbreak. She demonstrated her own ability to craft a delicate folk number about high school romance with her recent single “Heavy Weather”. Now, on an acoustic take on the B-side, she’s turned her skill on someone else’s work by discovering the bitterness hidden within Royal Blood’s fiery “Out of the Black”.

Cut from the British rock duo’s self-titled debut LP, the original “Out of the Black” is a murky blues rock number that stomps on heavy drum beats. Marten strips all of that away, however, transforming the track into a tear-streaked acoustic folk song, equal parts mournful and vengeful. As with much of her work, Marten’s version is highlighted by a guitar-picking facility and a vocal delicacy that far outstrips artists twice her age.

The video for the cover was recorded in a single sitting at the Star of Bethnal Green pub in London. Check it out below:

Here’s the original for comparison:
