Gallant has been delivering slice after slice of powerful R&B out of his hometown of Los Angeles recently. Today, he’s back with another gorgeous track, but it’s not entirely his own. The crooner has stripped away the ’90s rock perfection of Foo Fighters’ “Learn to Fly” and turned it into a gentle, redemptive bit of modern rhythm and blues.
Every instrument is taken out of the track, replaced with softly pressed keys, chirping birds, and Gallant’s own background vocals to create a simple base for the song to lift off from. It floats along on crisp spring waves for the most part, lovely and warm. As the chorus comes in and Gallant sends his vocals off into the blue sky, however, tribal drums rumble in. They never beat the track down, though, instead adding to its stark beauty.
While there’s no remake of the original’s classic video, you can listen to the cover below.
Gallant will step onto the stage for just a trio of shows in LA and NYC this summer. The live shows are hard to come by, so check those dates below.
