Mas Ysa announces debut album Seraph, shares new single “Margarita” — listen

on May 12, 2015, 12:45pm

Thomas Arsenault first came to our attention as Mas Ysa back in 2014 with his standout performance at South by Southwest. Since then, anticipation for the electro-pop artist’s debut album has steadily risen, stoked recently by the release of his single “Look Up”. Now, the Canadian producer/songwriter has finally announced details of the record, Seraph, out July 24th on Downtown Records.

“Look Up” features on the new album, as does the latest single, “Margarita”. The song is a jaunt through the Serengeti, pulsing synths and flute notes padding gently across the steady thump of drum machines. Though the instrumentation remains fairly sparse until the horns come in for the latter half, the track is absolutely stuffed with emotion. Arsenault’s voice crackles with urgency as he sings of his love and respect for someone very dear to him. “This is named for my mom,” he said in a press release, “who’s also on the cover art of everything I do. It deals with the trauma of becoming your own autonomous person and that person when you see your parent as a fallible person. It’s a complicated thank you.”

Take a listen:

Seraph was recorded and produced in Arsenault’s own home studio, with additional production coming from Steve Rivette (Liars). Mixing was handled by Grammy-nominated Damian Taylor (Arcade Fire, Björk). Below, find the album tracklist, Mas Ysa’s tour schedule with Tanlines, and the “Margarita” single artwork.
