Miley Cyrus and Joan Jett rock out in Miley’s backyard — watch

on May 05, 2015, 10:20am

Last month, Miley Cyrus helped induct Joan Jett and the Blackhearts into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, penning a moving speech as well as joining the rockers on-stage for a fiery performance. Less than two weeks later, the two acts have linked up once again, this time combining their musical talents on behalf of the Happy Hippie, a nonprofit organization founded by Cyrus which rallies “young people to fight injustice facing homeless youth, LGBT youth and other vulnerable populations.”

Together, Cyrus and Jett joined forces for the inaugural installment of the Happy Hippie Backyard Sessions, a live performance video series created to raise awareness and funds for the foundation. Filmed in the Bangerz singer’s own backyard, the first clip features a badass rendition of “Different”, a track off Jett and the Blackhearts’ 2013 album, Unvarnished. The two ladies, though generations and genres apart, found common ground and great chemistry once again, as they traded snarling lines and even smokier looks. Watch their performance below.

In a statement, Cyrus spoke about the foundation:

“Pointless judgment and its effects are unfortunately something that is way too common. All humans have valid feelings and rights! I want to use my voice as a megaphone to young people everywhere and encourage human evolution. No one should have to hide who they really are, no matter what his or her name, gender or status. That’s why Happy Hippies are here to say that every life is valuable!”

Ariana Grande, Against Me! frontwoman Laura Jane Grace, and ’70s singer-songwriter Melanie Safka are all expected to team up with Cyrus on upcoming installments of the Backyard Sessions.
