Since the release of his impressive 2014 debut EP, Mid-City Island, rising soul/folk musician Moses Sumney has gone on to earn stamps of approval from some of music’s finest songwriters. Over the last 12 months, he’s toured as part of Karen O’s backing band, shared the stage with Local Natives, Solange, and Hundred Waters, and contributed to Beck’s Song Reader album alongside the likes of Jack White, Tweedy, and Jarvis Cocker.
Now, Sumney has plans to follow up his EP with a new 7-inch, due out this summer through Terrible Records. According to a press release, the two-track collection was “recorded to a 4-track cassette recorder in an old cabin in Big Bear over the winter, where Moses spent weeks alone writing in isolation, before being mixed by [label co-founder and Grizzly Bear member] Chris Taylor.”
The singer-songwriter teases the forthcoming release today with the A-side track “Seeds”. While its gentle, finger-picked guitar may recall the fragility of current tour mate Sufjan Stevens, Sumney is clearly an artist all his own. His croon seems to billow like a shapeless cloud of fumes, his meditations at once cool and calming, yet rife with emotional weight. Listen in below.
Sumney is in the studio working on his full-length debut. In the meantime, catch him on the road this month as he supports Stevens, St. Vincent, and Erykah Badu.
