Prince to play Rally 4 Peace concert on Mother’s Day

on May 05, 2015, 11:57pm

Last weekend, Prince hit the stage at his Paisley Park estate to play a Rally 4 Peace concert in honor of Freddie Gray, the Baltimore man who was allegedly killed while in police custody. This weekend, he’ll do it all over again, but this time the concert will take place at the center of the conflict.

On Mother’s Day (Sunday, May 10th), Prince will present a second Rally 4 Peace concert at Royal Farms Arena in West Baltimore (less than three miles away from where Gray was initially detained). “The event is meant to be a catalyst for pause and reflection following the arrest and death of Freddie Gray,” according to a press release. “Attendees are invited to wear something gray in tribute.”

Update: TIDAL will live stream audio from the 60-minute concert for free. According to a press release, the streaming company is making it available to non-subscribers in order to “provide an opportunity for all people globally to experience the music and participate in a cultural moment that can inspire, motivate and provoke changes in our current climate.”

Jay Z, one of the many artists invested in TIDAL, spoke about the significance of the event:

“I am honored to join Prince in his mission to inspire through the uniting power of music and be able to offer a platform where this moment can be shared globally.  We invite all to experience the music and contribute in their own way to promote peace, tolerance and understanding. Our prayers go out to Freddie Gray’s family and every family affected by brutality and senseless violence.”

The press release adds that “several industry superstars” are expected to join Prince for the concert.

Tickets go on sale Wednesday, May 6th, and proceeds will benefit local Baltimore-based youth charities.
