Shamir has been making a swift climb up the ladder of public recognition on the back of his bouncing R&B and hip-hop tunes. But the young North Las Vegas native isn’t afraid to Ratchet it down a notch, either, as he proved with a recent appearance on Annie Mac’s BBC Radio 1 Session broadcast. After chatting it up with Mac about his swift rise, his breakthrough hit “On the Regular” (“definitely a joke song”), and his band’s live performance, Shamir turned in a cover of Kacey Musgraves’ “Merry Go ‘Round” as his Wildcard performance.
Instead of his usual bonkers synth-pop disco, Shamir performed the Grammy-winning track with just an acoustic guitar and perhaps the most controlled delivery of his nasally vocals ever. It’s a wonderfully gentle rendition, and a sweet surprise coming from a singer known for an extremely unsubtle, in-your-face style. You can listen to the whole Session below, or skip to the 08:40 mark to hear the cover.
