The New Pornographers are about to head out on the road once again in continued support of their latest album, Brill Bruisers. Before they grace the Primavera stage, however, the band’s unveiled a video for the LP track “Champions of Red Wine”.

Directed by Leblanc + Cudmore, who also helmed their previous clip for “Dancehall Domine”, it follows a middle-aged man who seems to be slogging through a particularly rough phase in his life. He drinks day in and day out at various bars in his Cuban hometown, gets into brawls with random strangers, lusts for women he can’t have, and craves any semblance of a meaningful relationship. Towards the end of the clip, he finds solace at the beach, finally, in a very Mad Men sort of way. Watch below.

Leblanc + Cudmore’s Scott Cudmore offered his thoughts on the clip:

“Obviously there’s a debt to the Paris, Texas locale of peep shows here and that was sort of the jumping off point for the video. I had this idea of a rambling, drunk loner in a foreign environment – somebody who can’t really connect to anything except for on a very superficial level. All the interactions he has are forced, more like transactions than anything. It’s a portrait of this guy, a few hours, a couple of days, in his life as he flails wildly around – his only means of communication being physical. The video is a fragment of this character. We only know him in the moment, not where he comes from or where he is going.”
