So There is the forthcoming collaborative album from Ben Folds and New York instrumental outfit yMusic, known for their work with Dirty Projectors, Beck, and My Brightest Diamond. Due out on September 11th via New West Records, the eight-track effort was recorded in less than two weeks in Fold’s RCA Studio A in Nashville, as well as New York and Los Angeles. In a statement, the singer-songwriter claimed that he can’t “recall ever being quite so excited about an album.”
“It’s just that we don’t often get to make a record that we’ve never heard before,” Folds continued. “The arrangements you will hear on this record are straight up rock – not ornamentation. The odd instrumentation – piano, cello, viola, violin, flute/piccolo/alto flute, trumpet/French horn, and clarinet/bass clarinet, with no bass and more often than not, no drums – is yielding something that I can’t wait to release.”
While September is still a few months away, today we get a peek at the album with “Capable of Anything”. Highlighted by Folds’ lilting vocals and waves of whirring instrumentation, it’s a sweeping pop number that hits all the right sweet spots. More importantly, it’s a promising sign of what’s to come. Listen to it over at NPR.com.
