Director Scott Derrickson has assembled one hell of a decorated cast for his upcoming Marvel feature Doctor Strange by enlisiting two Oscar nominees and one winner for the film’s three principal leads.
It’s been rumored for weeks now that 12 Years a Slave‘s Chiwetel Ejiofor was circling the villain role in the film, opposite Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange, and today Deadline has confirmed that Ejiofor will indeed play Baron Mordo, Doctor Strange’s nemesis. The same report also confirms Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, a Tibetan monk who teaches Strange and Mordo their magical powers.
In the comics, Mordo is a powerful sorcerer who plots to kill The Ancient One but fails and is exiled. As a result, he turns his sights to Stephen Strange, becoming his most powerful enemy. On screen, however, Mordo will be an amalgamation of characters from the Doctor Strange mythology, which likely means he will start off as a friendly peer of Strange’s before wreaking havoc with his powerful black magic.
With the swapping of genders (Ancient One) and race (Baron Mordo), Doctor Strange is shaping up to be one of the most progressive and exciting comic book movies in recent memory. Look for it in theaters November 4th, 2016.
