Writer/director James Gunn has revealed the title of his sequel to the smash-hit Guardians of the Galaxy. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige actually let the name slip during a press conference for Ant-Man, but now Gunn has posted confirmation on his Facebook; the film will be called Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.
The name is, of course, a reference to the incredible in-movie soundtrack found on Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord’s Awesome Mix Vol. 1. An Awesome Mix Vol. 2 is expect to feature in a similar capacity in the sequel, so the title makes perfect sense.
As Gunn noted in his post, internet sleuths already guessed the title based on an image Gunn had posted of the script’s title page. Check out how the font geniuses reached their conclusion and read Gunn’s post below:
In the post’s comment section, Gunn answered a few questions regarding the script. “Yeah, I came up with a LOT of titles for Vol. 2,” Gunn said in response to a compliment on the succinct name. “But because Guardians of the Galaxy is already so wordy, it seemed strange to add another bunch of words after it. I liked Vol. 2 the best, so that’s what I stuck on the cover of the screenplay – and, fortunately, the guys liked it.”
He also confirmed that Pratt did in fact cry after reading the script in Gunn’s living room. When asked about any orders handed down from Marvel about the movie’s direction, Gunn said he had complete creative freedom. “I don’t feel restricted in the least. I did not have a single story-telling obligation set upon me in making Vol. 2.”
In related news, Pratt won Best Actor in a Film at June 25th’s Saturn Awards, but wasn’t present to accept the trophy. Instead, he sent Gunn (who also won Best Director) a text with his speech, and instructed the director to read it verbatim. Which he did, in all its hilarity. Check out the video below.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is scheduled for a May 5th, 2017 release.
