Katherine Waterston has seen her stock rise dramatically thanks to roles in Inherent Vice and the upcoming Steve Jobs biopic. Today, she’s landed her biggest gig yet as the female lead in Harry Potter spin-off Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. Waterson will co-star alongside Eddie Redmayne, who will play the film’s protagonist Newt Scamander.
Waterston will play Tina (short for Porpentina), a witch who operates in New York City and encounters magizooligist Scamander while he searches for and documents different magical creatures across the globe. Fantastic Beasts will be the first Harry Potter-related film to venture across the pond and explore American magic.
Two other American roles are yet to be cast; a girl named Queenie who is Tina’s younger sister and a boy named Jacob who will be Scamander’s rival in the film.
David Yates, who directed the final four Harry Potter movies, will helm Fantastic Beasts from a script written by J.K. Rowling herself, who is making her screenwriting debut for the film.
The intent for Fantastic Beasts is to start a new trilogy and open the door for more Harry Potter spin-offs in the future.
Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is due out November 18th, 2016.
