Stephen Colbert picks Jon Batiste as Late Show bandleader

on June 04, 2015, 2:45pm

With the first promo video out of the way, Stephen Colbert has crossed off a second action item from his list. The new host of CBS’s Late Show has settled on Jonathan Batiste to serve as bandleader.

A native of Louisiana and graduate of Julliard, Batiste is a big name in the worlds of jazz and blues music. A prolific solo musician in his own right, he’s also collaborated with Prince, Wynton Marsalis, Allen Toussaint, and Dr. John over the years. Batiste has a very charismatic personality, as seen on-stage with raucous live performances and off the stage in acting roles on HBO’s Treme and Spike Lee’s Red Hook Summer.

Batiste actually appeared on The Colbert Report back in 2014, which you can replay below. Update: Colbert has also shared a new promo video introducing Batiste.

“His music makes the audience feel so good, we may have to install a ‘Do Not Make Love’ sign,” Colbert said in a statement.

Late Show with Stephen Colbert premieres September 8th.
