In addition to reboots, it seems musical adaptations are the latest rage to sweep Hollywood. In the last few months alone, news of Broadway-style versions of Alice in Wonderland, The Man Who Fell To Earth, and Fight Club have made headlines. The latest entry to the book-turned-film-turned-musical craze? That would be American Psycho, which tells the story of a yuppie, Manhattan murderer.
The production is based on Brett Easton Ellis’ 1991 novel of the same name, which was later turned into the 2000 psychological thriller starring Christian Bale. The musical originally debuted overseas in London, but is hoping to find a following at a “yet-unnamed Shubert Theatre” in New York City this winter.
Actor Benjamin Walker, known for his roles in Flags of Our Fathers and Kinsey, will portray the American Psycho protagonist Patrick Bateman. Tony Award-winning composer Duncan Sheik is said to have written the music and lyrics of more than a dozen of the adaptation’s songs.
Previews for the musical are slated to begin on February 19th.
