What Went Down is the new album from Foals, due out on August 28th through Warner Music. The 10-track effort, which follows 2013’s Holy Fire, was recorded at Studios La Fabrique in the south of France with producer James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, HAIM).

Frontman Yannis Philippakis is said to have been inspired by themes of “cultural identity, generational anxiety, cynicism, pessimism and heartbreak,” according to a press release. “I wanted to tap into my inner madman,” he says, “and feel like I was channeling some sort of fevered creature.”

Already we’ve heard the LP’s title track, one of Foals’ most aggressive offerings to date. Today, the English outfit’s revealed “Mountain at My Gates”. Though tamer than its predecessor, it’s a hooky number nonetheless, highlighted by Philippakis’ towering yelp and dynamic mix of riffs and drums. The outro packs an especially exhilarating punch. Listen in below.

In a recent interview, Philippakis detailed the song’s backstory:

“I’d recorded the beginning riff on my phone ages ago. At the beginning it had a baggy feel, but became less so with more work. The central image – ‘I see a mountain at my gates’ was from me getting more interested in seeing what would come out lyrically where there wasn’t a pre-conceived idea. Normally I write voraciously in books and journals, then harvest a lot of that for the record. This, though, came out instantaneously in the room.”

Update — July 20th at 3:30 p.m.: During their Maida Vale Session for BBC Radio 1, Foals debuted album closer “A Knife in the Ocean”. Take a listen here (scroll to the 1:42:00 mark).
