Gary Clark Jr. announces new album, The Story Of Sonny Boy Slim, premieres “The Healing” — listen

on July 30, 2015, 1:20pm

Gary Clark Jr. has announced the follow-up to his smash 2012 debut, Blak and Blu. Entitled The Story Of Sonny Boy Slim, the sophomore release is due out September 11th from Warner Bros. Records.

Clark himself wrote, produced, and arranged the album, even playing the majority of the instruments himself. His sisters, Shawn and Savannah Clark, also perform on the record as backing vocalists. As Clark says in a promo video for the LP (which you can watch below), “The underlying tone of this album is faith and hope really at the end of the day. ‘Cause that’s all we need.”

The video features samples of a few songs, and you can hear influences of everything from Americana to classic rock to straight blues music. “I love hip-hop,” Clark professes in the clip. “I love drums, I love the intensity of those sounds. This thing, I want it to be banging.” You can hear this banging appeal on the album’s lead single, “The Healing”. There’s definitely a hip-hop rhythm beating behind the smokey guitars as Clark sings out, “This music is my healing/ Oh Lord, I need some healing/ ‘Cause when this world upsets me, this music sets me free.” Check it out:

Update — Friday 12:09 p.m.: Hear another new song called “Grinder”:

Pre-orders for the album begin today, and come with insta-grat downloads of “The Healing” and “Grinder”. Clark is on the festival circuit right now and will join up with Foo Fighters for a stretch in September. Afterwards, he’ll have a few headlining spots before the end of the year; 2016 will see him on the road from late-winter to mid-spring. All tickets purchased on-line for that trek will come with a free download of The Story Of Sonny Boy Slim.
