Director Cary Fukunaga is about to flip the switch and make Netflix a real contender for Oscar season with his latest feature, Beasts Of No Nation. His follow-up to last year’s work on True Detective finds the young filmmaker adapting Nigerian-American author Uzodinma Iweala’s tragic story of the same name, which follows a young African boy who enlists into a rebel army following the death of his parents. The brutal squad is led by an equally brutal commander, portrayed by the one and only Idris Elba. Judging from the intense teaser trailer below, Elba seems to be a shoe-in for next year’s awards season, and what’s more: the Academy won’t have any excuse in not seeing it. After all, everyone has Netflix. Watch below.
Beasts of No Nation will premiere at this year’s Venice Film Festival. The film will then hit Netflix and select theaters, mostly to qualify for the Oscars, on October 16th.
