LEGO Movie directors to helm Star Wars spinoff movie about Han Solo

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are officially geekdoms hottest filmmaking duo. They’ve been tapped to write The Flash for DC/Warner Bros., help Sony/Marvel launch the first-ever animated Spider-Man  movie, and reportedly are trying to blend their successful Jump Street franchise with Men in Black. Not to mention all the LEGO movie spinoffs and sequels they’re producing. But now, all those films are thrown into question as LucasFilms has announced that the duo are heading to a galaxy far, far away.

Miller and Lord will direct a film following Han Solo through his early days as he becomes the lovable scoundrel we all know and love. Lawrence Kasdan, who also penned The Empire Strikes BackReturn of the Jedi, and the forthcomingThe Force Awakens, will write the script alongisde his son Jon Kasdan, writer/director of The First Time and In the Land of Women. Kathleen Kennedy (Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom, Back to the Future, Jurassic Park, everything) will produce alongside co-producer Will Allegra and executive producers Jason McGatlin and the elder Kasdan.

“This is the first film we’ve worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with,” said Lord and Miller in a joint statement. “We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us. This is a dream come true for us. And not the kind of dream where you’re late for work and all your clothes are made of pudding, but the kind of dream where you get to make a film with some of the greatest characters ever, in a film franchise you’ve loved since before you can remember having dreams at all.”

The Hollywood Reporter broke the story, stating that the project is the next in line for the pair, which puts into question their position on their previously announced movies. Since they weren’t expected to direct any of the films, however, there’s a chance they could stay on in some capacity. THR says they could stick around to write The Flash and/or the Jump Street sequel. The pair’s involvement on the animated Spidey feature is also expected to be minimally impacted.

Interestingly, Miller interned at LucasFilm when he was starting out, and actually played a Stormtrooper in one the special editions of the original Star Wars films.

THR notes that this Solo solo film is not the same movie that director Josh Trank left/was fired from a few weeks back. That film’s expected to focus on the origins of Boba Fett. The first in the anthology spinoff films will be December 16, 2016’s Star Wars: Rogue One, the Gareth Edwards directed film about the group of rebels that stole the original plans for the Death Star. Lord and Miller’s Solo prequel is expected May 25th, 2018.
