Earlier this week, we took took a trip down memory lane and witnessed a 20-year-old Thom Yorke perform with his pre-Radiohead band, the melodic punk outfit Headless Chickens. Now, thanks to tireless fans on Reddit, we’ve got another bit of throwback footage.
It should come as no surprise that prior to Radiohead, Yorke was into some strange, unconventional music. Nothing could exemplify the frontman’s experimental beginnings better than this 1990 video of a “contemporary classical concert.”
The 22-minute improvisational recital, which features Yorke alongside other Exeter University students, is chock-full of arrangements that are discordant, wandering, and downright odd. The major highlights: Yorke’s unsettling howl that starts at the 14:20 mark; Yorke’s totally ’90s haircut; and, as our own News Editor Ben Kaye points out, the performance piece (?) in which random people toss around cardboard boxes willy-nilly at the 10:30 mark.
