Marriage is tested in Joe Swanberg’s latest dramedy, Digging for Fire. Jake Johnson and Rosemarie DeWitt star as a young thirtysomething couple tasked with housesitting a gorgeous, mountainous estate for the weekend. There’s a whole subplot involving a rusty gun and a creepy bone found in the backyard — hence, all the digging — but really, it’s anchored metaphor for the spiritual conflicts that surround the two leads.
Johnson and DeWitt lead an all-star cast that includes Sam Rockwell, Mike Birbiglia, Anna Kendrick, Orlando Bloom, Brie Larson, Timothy Simons, Jenny Slate, Ron Livingston, Melanie Lynskey, Sam Elliott, and a few others. It’s a major leap from Swanberg’s previous squadron of talent, even over 2013’s Drinking Buddies, and the Chicago filmmaker capitalizes on the opportunity, crafting what’s arguably his most heartfelt film to date.
Digging for Fire hits select theaters August 21st and iTunes on August 25th via The Orchard.
